Check out this great talk by D.A. Carson in which he discusses the ministry and mission of the local church.  He hits on the role that leaders in the church must play in disciplemaking.  Commenting on 2 Timothy 2:2, Carson says,

“You can’t preserve the pattern of sound teaching by merely a negative posture of discernment.  The way you preserve the pattern of sound teaching…is, in the first instance, in promulgating the Gospel! … You don’t preserve [the Gospel] in a little box.  You preserve it in people!”

He reminds us that,

“there is no other plan, but this plan for continual proclamation and articulation of the Gospel to another generation, to another generation, to another generation…there is no other plan.”

Carson also reminds us that imitation is key to the call to disciplemaking.  He cautions,

“Don’t ever think that its wrong to say to a young person, freshly converted, ‘Well I can’t tell you what to do, but I’ll be praying for you.’  No, no, what you should be saying, if you’re a mature Christian, is, ‘Watch me and I’ll show you how to live as a Christian.'”
